Overview

Hardness on the line, mould after mould. The probe reads the mould as it passes, so a soft or over-rammed mould is seen at the moulding machine rather than at the knockout.

The Versatile Online Mould Hardness Tester VPRH measures mould hardness directly on the moulding line. It can be configured to take a reading from every mould as it passes, and each reading is shown on the built-in screen.

Hardness is the quickest read on how the sand has been rammed. Taken on every mould rather than on a sample, it shows ramming drifting before the casting shows it.

The probe, the arm that lowers it onto the mould and the control panel.

Measuring range

The probe reads the mould hardness number on a scale of 0 to 100, to a least count of 1. Readings are traceable to NABL standards. No testing standard is claimed for the instrument itself.

VPRH reads the B scale.

Mounting and line I/O

A complete installation is usually made up of the probe, a pneumatic accessory that lowers it onto the mould and lifts it clear, a mounting stand, and an HDMI output feeding an extended display where the reading has to be seen from a distance. All four of those are optional and are quoted separately.

The controller carries the I/O needed to work on a moving line without a separate PLC:

  • Three digital outputs: one to lower the probe, one to retract it, one for the hooter or alarm.
  • Two digital inputs: for the proximity switches that tell the controller where the mould is.

Where the readings go

Every reading appears on the built-in screen and can be sent onward three ways:

  • Cloud: uploaded and stored through V-Sync.
  • Your own server: VSync Local Server keeps the readings on one PC inside the plant, for foundries that would rather their data did not leave the site.
  • Extended display: through the optional HDMI output.

What is supplied

Included: the mould hardness probe, a calibration certificate and the instruction manual.

Quoted separately: pneumatic accessory, probe mounting stand assembly, data interfacing accessories, integrated local server, HDMI output module and extended display.

Calibration

Calibration is recommended at least twice a year, using calibration kit VKMC, the mould and core hardness tester kit.

This model works with VSync web sync, so results are logged and stored online. A supervisor can review a shift from a browser, and a service engineer can look at the same data remotely. See how VSync works →
