Online Mould Strength Tester VPRS

The Versatile Online Mould Strength Tester VPRS measures mould strength on the moulding line, so a soft mould can be pulled before it is poured. Range 0 to 5 kg/cm², least count 0.01 kg/cm², with an alarm output for readings outside your limits and readings sent on by Ethernet, V-Sync cloud or your own in-plant server.

Overview

A soft mould caught before it is poured. The probe reads mould strength on the line, so a weak mould can be pulled at the moulding machine rather than found as a scrapped casting.

The Versatile Online Mould Strength Tester VPRS measures mould strength directly on the moulding line. The probe tip is pressed against the mould face, and the resistance of the sand is reported as mould strength in kg/cm². It can be configured to take a reading from every mould as it passes.

Where a reading falls outside the limits you set, the hooter output is triggered, so a soft mould is more likely to be caught before metal is poured.

Measuring range

Mould strength is read across 0 to 5 kg/cm² to a least count of 0.01 kg/cm², which is fine enough to follow the drift in a green sand system rather than only catching gross failures. Readings are traceable to NABL standards, against Versatile manufacturing standards.

Mounting and line I/O

A complete installation is usually made up of the probe, a pneumatic accessory that lowers it onto the mould and lifts it clear, and a mounting stand that carries it beside the line. The pneumatic accessory and the stand are optional and are quoted separately.

The controller carries the I/O needed to work on a moving line without a separate PLC:

  • Three digital outputs: one to lower the probe, one to retract it, one for the hooter or alarm.
  • Two digital inputs: for the proximity switches that tell the controller where the mould is.

Where the readings go

Every reading appears on the built-in screen and can be sent onward three ways:

  • Cloud: uploaded and stored through V-Sync.
  • Your own server: VSync Local Server keeps the readings on one PC inside the plant, for foundries that would rather their data did not leave the site.
  • Extended display: a 7 segment display repeating the live figure where the moulders can see it.

Connection is by Ethernet (RJ45).

What is supplied

Included: the mould strength probe, a calibration certificate and the instruction manual.

Quoted separately: pneumatic accessory, probe mounting stand assembly, data interfacing accessories, integrated local server and the extended display.

Calibration

Calibration is recommended at least twice a year, using the strength probe calibration kit.

Handheld alternative

Where strength is checked by an operator walking the line rather than measured on every mould, the handheld Mould Strength Tester Electronic VMSE covers the same measurement.

Readings, in the cloud with VSync

This model works with VSync web sync, so results are logged and stored online. A supervisor can review a shift from a browser, and a service engineer can look at the same data remotely. See how VSync works →
